Dandridge was one of the greatest hitters and outfielders to play the game. He spent the majority of his career playing in the Negro and Mexican Leagues playing for the Newark Dodgers and Eagles. And by the time Dandridge’s fellow teammates and players were starting to get called up to the Major Leagues in 1947, the 34 year old Dandridge was considered too old. Clearly overlooked by the majors, Dandridge batted .362 with 144 hits and 64 RBI’s for Giants’ farm club, Minneapolis Millers. He was later named MVP after leading the Millers to a championship.
Close friend, Monte Irvin, said “Dandridge didn’t get the chance to play in the majors, but he had major league talent. He was a superstar”. Approaching the end of his playing career, Dandridge mentored a young and quite talented Major League prospect, Willie Mays. Though closely eluting professional play with the Giants, Dandridge worked as a scout for the franchise after his retirement in 1955.
Dandridge was finally recognized in 1987 by the Veterans Committee with an induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
