After serving in the US Navy during WWII and earning a purple heart in the Normandy landings, Berra joined the New York Yankees near the end of the 1946 season. The 18-time All-Star catcher spent all but one of his 19 seasons catching for the New York Yankees. Berra has some of the most impressive playoff statistics in baseball history, winning 10 World Series Championships, the most in history; he caught Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series, played or coached in 21 World Series, winning 13 Championships. Berra recorded World Series records for most games, hits, singles, doubles, at bats, games caught and catcher putouts. He also recorded the first pinch hit home run in a World Series (1947, game 3).
He’s one of only 6 players to have won the MVP Award three times and holds the record for most shutouts (173) caught by any catcher. Additionally, Berra was remembered for his famous “Yogi-isms”: “It ain’t over till it’s over”, “90 percent of baseball is mental; the other half is physical”, “it’s deja vu all over again”, and “I really didn’t say everything I said”.
Berra was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972.
