A 10 time All-Star, Billy Herman was best known for his stellar defense and consistent hitting with a career .304 batting average. Herman’s best season came in 1935 when he led the league with 227 hits, 57 doubles and a career high .341 batting average. His performance that year subsequently helped lead the Cubs to a National League pennant and a World Series meeting with Babe Ruth’s New York Yankees.
Herman was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1941 where he again helped lead his team to a National League pennant and another meeting with the dominant Yankees. He retired in 1947 as a player-manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He continued coaching and later managed the Red Sox from 1964-1966 and actively coached in various roles through 1979.
Herman was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1975.
